A few months ago I stumbled upon caricature artist Donald Robertson’s Instagram. The aesthetic of vibrant homemade like paintings and drawings catalogued together commanded my attention. After weeks of owing and awing over his drawings and family photos, I had the pleasure of interviewing Robertson (highlight of my blog I should add)! A creative mastermind so in demand everyone from New York Post, Vanity Fair, Fast Company, The Business of Fashion, American Elle, Observer and Billboard, etc., have tracked him down to praise this modern day Andy Warhol, or as he prefers, Pharrell Williams (all positive vibes), for his phenomenal art turned fashion genius. A deserving “Man of the Week” is a huge understatement. In my opinion, Robertson is worthy of “Man of the Year!”
Robertson’s visual artifacts and self expressive cartoonlike porn depicting fashion icons, luxury products and marketing campaigns have earned him a fast growing 179,000+ followers in just four years. His charming social media presence gained him respect and international attention. He was nominated by the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) as “Instagrammer of the Year.” Online Robertson’s goes by the alias @drawbertson, but his nine-to-five job is roving creative director for Estée Lauder.
Recognized in the fashion world for decades, Robertson helped launch American Marie Claire and American Glamour Magazine with Hearst and Condé Nast publications proving he is no stranger to the health, beauty and fashion world. Robertson may have began perfecting his craft in the 80’s when he helped with the launch of MAC Cosmetics, and again in the 90’s contributing to the concept behind MAC’s Viva Glam line, but I am convinced his fan’s and peers would agree he now owns the title “Fashion’s Favorite Artist” coined by Vanity Fair in August 2015. This might explain his increasing popularity and illustrations gracing the likes of fans such as Beyoncé, January Jones, Pharrell Williams, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna.
With showings at Art Basel and numerous collaborations with designers — Giles Deacon, Lisa Perry and Stacy Bendet to name a few, as well as, retailers, Colette, Bergdorf Goodman, and J.Crew, he has built sustainable partnerships capitalizing on his takeover of the fashion industry. A seemingly humble and relatable man, for someone with a list of accolades like Robertson’s. One things for sure, his self-made empire has paved the way for a steadfast future.
From what I’ve gathered from Robertson, he is a man true to my soul and passion inspired by other likeminded creative and entrepreneurial types. He spends as much time self promoting his brand via social media as he does promoting others and boasting images of his endearing love for his family. He is an all around gem who’s handwork has proven everything he touches turns to gold. If I’ve learned anything from Robertson it’s that everything is possible (without sleep), and you can have it all! #MCM
Yes. I’m launching a big new brand for Estée Lauder next week with one of my favorite rebels from Social media. Launches on August 15th stay tuned. Gunna be great.
That is a good question. The older I get the simpler it gets. I recently moved to LA from NY. Gone are the suits, shoes and all the expensive stuff. I have uniqlo t-shirts and shorts, and when it’s a formal occasion I replace my birkenstalks with running shoes.
We recently had twins. Bringing my kid total to Five. That means “Old McDonald Had A Farm” is in heavy rotation at our Casa.
Hire for desire. You are your most attractive at work. This is my advice. Do not tell your HR dept.
I want to try and undo all the damage Donald Trump has done to the name Donald. It’s been ruined for generations to come now. I must fix this.
Flat shoes. I’m over watching someone suffer and being in able to not walk a block.
My phone charger.
Bali. Amankila resort! Just the two of us. Came back preggars with twins.
Google this if you don’t believe me. Beyoncé bought a lot of my fashion collab stuff. Bags, shoes printed clothes and I did a number of fashion shoots with them for her blog. Just to be nice. Google it. I’m not lying.
Hmmmm not including all the stylish women in my family I would have to say Beyoncé. See the question before this one.
Yes. I’m working with Assouline on a Donald coffee table book. I’m excited that they even called to discuss it.
